Hop aboard the SY Vigilant, and enjoy a day-sail in the Bay of Islands on this full day, small group tour. Enjoy insights and knowledge with your guide regarding the Bay of Islands from a local’s perspective.

Vigilant is a beautiful traditional 42 ft Cutter rig yacht with a wineglass transom, teak decks, and a swamp kauri wooden interior and enough room to find your own space. Enjoy an adventure away from the crowds of sightseers. Here, you can steer your own experience by helping the skipper at the helm, hoisting the sails or, if you prefer, just relaxing on deck while you journey from island to island. If you wish, you can swim on one of the beaches, snorkel and kayak or take a tender to shore to the beach. Comb the shores and walk around to see some great lookouts with panoramic views of the islands.

Begin your departure by setting sail from Russell wharf at 10am. There are a plethora of islands to choose from for this excursion.

  • Sail to one of the many islands and looking out for marine life
  • 12pm arrive to one of the many islands for lunch(included in price) smoked chicken or vegetarian option available
  • Snorkel, kayak and swimming available during our lunch time stopover
  • Walking up to one of the view points that allow panorama views of the many islands
  • 1:30pm depart island and set sail to the volcanic rock formation named The Black Rocks
  • Sail back to Russell and spotting marine life
  • Return 4pm Russell wharf
As sailing is very reliant on the weather conditions, this schedule is only to give an idea of how the day is planned. Each day is different and we visit different islands according the the wind strength and direction.

A great way to see the best of the bay

Join the Albatross V for a laid back, relaxing 2 ½ hour cruise around the pristine waters of the Bay of Islands. Enjoy being invigorated by the light sea breezes and entertained with a lighthearted commentary about our marine life and the local area. Passing picturesque bays and rocky outcrops as well as islands alive with lush, green native bush, we’ll meander our way around the bay. We often see gannets diving, penguins and various bird life along the way so have your camera ready. You may even be privileged enough to see local dolphins if they decide to ride the Albatross’s bow wave. Soak up the scenery as you enjoy a complimentary tea, coffee or something from our on board cafe.

Departs Russell wharf; 3.30pm    Returns;  6.00pm

Kororareka known as the birthplace of a nation or the hell hole of the Pacific is where this cruise starts, departing from Russell wharf you have the chance to come aboard and see the amazing Bay of Islands.

Departing twice daily at 8.00 am and 3.30 pm for an exploration into the natural beauty of this area. Sit back, chill and relax and enjoy complimentary tea and coffee as Albatross V meanders through the Islands. Learn about Cook’s landing (and the cannon ball story) and the gorgeous twin lagoon’s bay on Motuarohia island, learn how a French explorer tried to claim New Zealand as their own and the gruesome story of Assassination Cove, take in the splendour of the beautiful bays and beaches while taking in the natural environment and hearing about the rejuvenation process in place bringing back the birdsong to the area. The return trip takes you past the rugged side of the Islands where sea caves and rocky outcrops are prevalent showing another side of this marine paradise.

Your tour will include a laid back style commentary aimed at entertaining and enlightening to add to your knowledge of the amazing eco systems that we have here both in and out of the water.

The Bay is a nursery for many fish species which in turn brings the larger species in to feed so sightings of bottlenose Dolphins, common dolphins, orcas and whales along with a diverse range of sea birds are common and an absolute treat especially when the dolphins decide to ride the bow wave. Although we do not proactively search for marine mammals the “Albatross V” is a favourite with them and it is not strange for dolphins to come from miles around just to say hi.

At the conclusion of your trip make sure you ask your crew for the local secrets of the area and where to find the best food, sights, and other experiences as they are always willing to share their insider knowledge.
