This tour will take you away from the crowds of visitors to exclusive locations and private wine tastings hosted by an experienced winemaker. (including Reserve wines not normally opened). This 'Small Group Tour' is very friendly with warm and genuine 'Kiwi Hospitality' from your hosts Roslyn & Don who personally guarantee to return you in time for your sailing.

Your host's, Don and Roslyn Bird, will collect you at the Napier Aquarium, which is the second stop on the free shuttle bus from the ship into Napier. You will travel in air conditioned comfort in a new minibus or a late model 4x4 SUV while your host's provide continuous commentary on the wonderful sights and scenery. The collection time will depend on your ships arrival time. As the tour duration is 4+ hours we like to depart reasonably early and on time to ensure all of the exciting itinerary stops are accomplished.

Itinerary

Drive through Napier
and experience the charming Art Deco and Spanish Mission architecture and the influence of the 1931 earthquake.

Travel north along the coast
to the beautiful Esk Valley via the vibrant seaside village of Ahuriri. Learn about the historic Maori settlement and the changes that the 1931 earthquake brought about.

Visit 'The Grange', your host's farm with amazing rural, coastal and city views. Stroll around Roslyn’s beautiful country garden. Enjoy feeding the sheep and other animals as we introduce you to New Zealand life style farming.

Drive up to an Esk Valley Hills lookout that challenges Te Mata Peak for Hawke's Bay's most majestic 360 degree views. Gaze over the farms, vineyards and pristine orchards on the valley floor.

Esk Valley Estate Winery was established by Don's grandfather in the late 1920's and where Don was the winemaker for a number of years. Esk Valley Estate is famous for ‘The Terraces’ single vineyard red wine.

Mission Estate Winery was established in 1851 by pioneering French Missionaries. It is New Zealand’s oldest winery and the birth place of New Zealand wine.

This twilight guided cycle is perfect for those short on time.  The route is approx. 16kms on flat, off-road cycle trail and includes a visit to a winery, abundant bird-life around the Estuary and a refreshing drink at a local pub in the bustling, historic port village of Ahuriri.  The tour operates daily from 4.00pm - 7.00pm during the daylight saving months of October through to March.  Experience lots of this beautiful region's highlights in the company of your knowledgeable local guide.

Your twilight cycle starts at 4.00pm at the Takaro Trails base at 9 Nelson Quay, Ahuriri, Napier.  We recommend you arrive at 3.45pm to enable an 'on time' departure.  You will first be set up on your bike and be given a safety briefing by your guide before cycling the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings with its distinctive Art Deco style.  Now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery we make a visit to sample the chardonnay made onsite.  Joining the cycle trail we then meander approx 10kms through a low-lying wetlandarea that was all part of a large tidal inlet before the 1931 earthquake.  The trail continues through sheep farming country before completing the 16km loop back to Ahuriri.  The tour ends with a well-deserved drink on the deck of a waterside bar where you can enjoy views of the sun setting over the water before returning to base at 7.00pm.
