Your group will gather to hear the history of the project before entering Te Tūī a Tāne - the southern enclosure of the forest. As you make your way along the paths of the sanctuary's ancient, vibrant, pest-free forest your guide will share stories of the 'maunga' mountain, along with their intimate knowledge of it's fauna and native wildlife, including many of New Zealand’s rarest and most endangered insects, birds and fish.

Further into the forest you can climb the lookout tower which is a 16m high platform in the tree tops. Here you can view the forest from the upper canopy and listen to the sounds of the forest and marvel at it's biodiversity.  You may have an opprtunity to meet our resident kaka, New Zealand's native parrot. These cheeky characters like to get up close.

From here you may choose to make your own way out of the forest, or stroll back with your guide, to the visitor centre where you can use the facilities, relax and take in the view. Here you will find informative displays and information about other guided tours and events at Sanctuary Mountain®.  You can also purchase refreshments and souvenirs, with all proceeds going towards conservation projects on the 'maunga' mountain.

Your tour will depart from the visitor centre at 1pm. From here, you will head down the track while listening to your guide tell you about the conservation project and the construction of our predator proof fence. Enter the wetland area through double gates and begin the adventure.

Explore our wetland and learn how 80% of wetlands in the Waikato were drained for agricultural use, and why they need to be restored.
You will learn about our large scale project, vision and the history of Maungatautari. Find out about the importance of the fence and our trapping and monitoring programmes.

Go into the Tuatarium to learn about the history, life cycle and physical characteristics of the tuatara and their journey to Maungatautari. With the assistance of our knowledgeable guides keep a look out for any that maybe basking in the warmth of the afternoon.

Our breeding pair of takahē  may be visible dining on their diet of grasses, once thought to be extinct; these rare birds were rediscovered in 1948.

Finally make your way back to the visitor centre where you can relax and take in the view and utilise our facilities. Here you will find informative displays and information about other tours and events at Sanctuary Mountain®. You can also purchase refreshments and souvenirs, with all proceeds going towards conservation projects on the 'maunga' mountain.

After being picked up from your Hamilton hotel at 10am (or another time if you prefer), sit back and relax on the 1 hour drive to the Waitomo Caves. The route passes through very scenic countryside and farmland in the beautiful Waikato region.

At Waitomo, join a 45-minute tour of the amazing glow-worm caves, including a tranquil boat ride on an underground stream to ensure a good view of the glow worms.

Then continue the journey in your private vehicle to a farm near the small town of Matamata and the Shire's Rest cafe, where you can have some lunch and from where your Hobbiton Movie Set Tour begins.

Lasting about 2 hours, your tour takes you on a drive through the rural sheep farm that was chosen as the Hobbiton Movie Set for The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. Hear how the location was chosen, how the sets were created and which scenes were shot here. Departing Hamilton Gardens hourly from 10am - 4pm (NB: From 12pm Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday), the vessel heads downstream on this fast-flowing hydro waterway through Hamilton City as far as Hamilton's famous landmark, The Fairfield Bridge, then back upstream, stopping off in the CBD before returning to the River Ferry Terminal at Hamilton Gardens.

Our Skippers provide an entertaining commentary telling the story of the region, and pointing out various landmarks including the site of the first European landings in the mid 1860s and the vessel they arrived on which is still sitting up on the riverbank.

Our morning begins at the base of the Kaimai ranges, we begin our first hike of the day, climbing steadily to the top of the stunning Wairere falls. At 155metres tall, these falls are the tallest in the North Island and clear days boast spectacular views as far as the eye can see across the Waikato region from the top.

After our descent, we make our way to the heart of the Waikato. A gentle walk along the banks of Te Waihou river leads us to the famous Blue Springs producing some of the clearest and purest water in New Zealand. Not a bad setting for a picnic lunch. A region renown for it's dairy farming and local produce, it's only natural that we visit a local cheese maker to sample some of the best cheeses in New Zealand. Multi-award winning cheesemakers Over the Moon Dairy are small in size but huge on creating unique flavourswith their cheese. 

Our afternoon is rounded off in fine style with a visit to Vilagrads, a fifth generation, family-owned winery. Sample a selection of their award-winning wines and ports and enjoy the stunning courtyard overlooking the vines.
